simple steps to healthy living: buying seasonal produce

The best way to buy produce is from a local source you trust like a farmer's market, a local farm, a CSA (community supported agriculture) or grocery store like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's that supports in season produce and provides organic options.

Eating produce in season is not just good for your health, it's also good for the environment. Having trucks haul fruits and veggies cross-country when they are not in season requires a lot of extras that aren't good for you, including what goes in to helping a truck travel cross-country as well as the gasses that are used to keep produce fresh longer.

Finding a reliable, local source is your best bet and knowing what's in season when, really helps your bottom line because even if you're buying organic, if its in season, it will be cheaper than imported/shipped items that are not.

Here's an at-a-glance list I've created to help you know what's good each season! Now....go eat your strawberries! But get them organically if you can...they are on the dirty dozen list!

  1. Love this, we buy fresh produce from our local farm, pick strawberries, peaches, blueberries.. and then get all our other produce from there, its the best way.

  2. Even better, grow your own if you can. Then you know exactly how it was grown. Some things require a lot of land but there are a lot of things that can be grown in a pot or container in a sunny window or on a deck or patio. Getting excited to get our garden in this year!

  4. Thank you for this list! I'm going to put it up in my pantry so I can reference it when I'm making my grocery list!

I belong to a writer's group that meets at a local church and all during the summer they have a farmer's market the same day we meet. So convenient!

  5. As a healthy organic lifestyle blogger I have to say, it is so nice when I meet another blogger that takes the time to illustrate the NEED to buy seasonal produce! I believe not only the health of our families but the health of our planet depends on us learning to live a more sustainable life and buying seasonal local produce does this and supports local farmers to boot. It also sticks it to major food "producers" which is a bonus!
